API 5L X42 Pipe vs Grade B

API 5L X42 and Grade B differ principally in minimum yield strength. In the API 5L 46th-edition SI baseline, Grade B has a minimum yield strength of 245 MPa and X42 has 290 MPa; both have a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa, subject to applicable notes. The higher yield minimum can affect calculated wall thickness, but selection must also consider dimensions, PSL, toughness, service requirements and fabrication.

Understanding X42 Pipe and Grade B Steel Pipe

Both grades are covered by API 5L for steel line pipe used in petroleum and natural gas transportation systems. API published the 47th edition in June 2026. Specify the contract edition and amendments, and use its SI or USC values consistently. The comparison here uses the 46th-edition SI baseline, with grade and PSL treated as separate requirements.

What Is API 5L Grade B

Grade B can be selected where its strength, dimensions and testing meet the approved design. Dual certification to ASTM A53 is possible only where the finished product independently meets both specifications. ASTM A106 covers seamless pipe, so welded ERW or LSAW pipe cannot be described as A106-compliant merely because it meets a similar strength level. Grade B does not automatically have a lower actual carbon equivalent than X42.

What Is API 5L X42 Pipe

X42 is a higher minimum yield-strength class than Grade B and can be ordered in PSL 1 or PSL 2. Grade B is also available under both PSLs. Compare the grades at the same PSL and service requirements; PSL 2 toughness or sour-service qualification should not be presented as exclusive benefits of X42.

Technical Comparison Specifications and Performance

The table below compares the stated SI strength baseline and procurement requirements. Neither grade is assigned a universal operating pressure or a single chemical recipe independent of process, dimensions and delivery condition.

Property or requirement Grade B X42
Minimum yield strength SI 245 MPa 290 MPa
Minimum tensile strength SI 415 MPa 415 MPa
PSL options PSL 1 or PSL 2 PSL 1 or PSL 2
Chemistry and CE Applicable product conditions Applicable product conditions
CVN Applicable PSL 2 provisions or order Applicable PSL 2 provisions or order
Sour-service suitability Additional qualification where required Additional qualification where required

Chemical Composition and Weldability

For either grade, chemistry and carbon-equivalent requirements depend on the applicable product conditions. Ordinary PSL 2 sulfur and phosphorus control does not by itself qualify steel for wet H2S service. Field welding must follow a qualified procedure accounting for actual chemistry, thickness, hydrogen level and restraint. E6010 and E7010 consumables may be used only where the approved WPS permits them; their selection does not establish that preheat can be omitted.

Manufacturing Processes ERW vs LSAW

LONGMA supplies round ERW and LSAW pipe in both grades. ERW generally uses coil-based forming and high-frequency welding, while LSAW uses plate forming and submerged arc welding. Available diameter, wall and length depend on the mill. Confirm the exact combination, applicable weld examination and hydrostatic test requirements in the inspection and test plan. Production capability is not a pressure rating.

Application Areas and Suitability

Compare the alternatives against the same approved design and service specification. The following conditions help structure the decision without assigning a fixed pressure boundary to either grade.

Grade B can be suitable when:

  • Its specified strength and selected wall thickness satisfy all relevant design loads and allowances.
  • The required toughness, delivery condition and service supplements can be supplied and demonstrated.
  • The total material and fabrication cost is competitive for the approved dimensions.

Any requested dual certification has been checked against the actual manufacturing route and complete product requirements.

X42 can offer value when:

  • Its higher specified yield strength permits an approved reduction in calculated pressure-design thickness or provides the strength margin required by the design.
  • The available wall and delivery condition meet the complete strength and toughness requirements at a competitive installed cost.
  • The supplied product also satisfies any specified sour-service qualification. Grade B can likewise be considered if it meets the applicable project requirements.
  • A grade change must be accepted by the designer before procurement. Minimum wall, buckling, corrosion allowance and construction loads may prevent the theoretical strength benefit from reducing the final ordered thickness.

For gas-pipeline pressure calculations, apply the adopted ASME B31.8 provisions and relevant factors. Specified yield strength is only one input; it does not establish maximum allowable operating pressure on its own.

Procurement Considerations for B2B Buyers

Compare quotations on the same technical basis. Grade, dimensions, PSL, inspection scope, coatings and document requirements all affect the supplied product and price.

Specify the EN 10204 document type and traceability requirements. Type 3.1 is validated by the manufacturer’s authorized inspection representative independent of manufacturing. Type 3.2 additionally involves the purchaser’s authorized representative or an inspector designated by official regulations. Agree third-party witness points separately. When Monogram-marked pipe is required, verify the manufacturing organization’s current API licence and scope.

NDE requirements depend on manufacturing process, PSL and any project supplements. Confirm weld coverage, methods and acceptance criteria; do not assume universal full-body UT on every PSL 2 product. Hydrostatic testing is a separate requirement and does not replace NDE. Review traceable records for both activities.

Stock sizes may be dispatched within 7–30 days and custom LSAW production with coating may require 30–45 days, subject to order confirmation. Confirm the actual schedule, inspection release and coating requirements before ordering. Where polyethylene coating to DIN 30670 is specified, identify the applicable part and edition; FBE and 3LPP require their own technical specifications.

Comparative Advantages and Buyer Decision Guide

Grade B and X42 are different strength classes rather than a general ranking of product quality. X42 may offer wall economy where the design permits it; Grade B may be economical where its available wall meets the same service requirements. Compare actual quotations and the approved design instead of assuming either grade always has the lower total cost.

For operator projects, verify the approved vendor requirements, manufacturing source, quality system and inspection arrangements. A Monogram licence, ISO 9001 certification and source inspection can support supplier qualification, but they do not automatically secure approval on every operator’s vendor list.

LONGMA has supplied both grades to customers including SINOPEC, CNPC, PEMEX, PDVSA and PTTEP. More than 60 senior technical staff support manufacturing and inspection activities. The order’s inspection plan defines the required records and release points.

Conclusion

X42 provides a higher minimum yield strength than Grade B in the stated baseline, while both share the same minimum tensile strength. Choose the grade together with wall thickness, PSL and service supplements. LONGMA supplies round ERW and LSAW pipe with the agreed inspection documentation and traceability. Confirm any low-temperature or sour-service requirements before production.

FAQ

Is X42 always better than Grade B

No. X42 has a higher minimum yield-strength class, but Grade B may meet the approved design at an economical wall thickness. Neither grade is inherently superior for every pressure, temperature or corrosion environment.

Does X42 PSL2 qualify for sour service automatically

No. Confirm the actual environment and order the applicable sour-service requirements and complete grade designation. Hardness limits and test locations depend on the specification. HIC and SSC qualification or testing must be addressed separately; passing one does not demonstrate resistance to the other.

What certifications should I request from a supplier

Request the documentation required by the contract, including material identification and the specified inspection certificate, test records and NDE reports. Verify the mill’s current licence if Monogram-marked product is required. State any additional quality-system certification or third-party inspection requirements before manufacture.

Can Grade B and X42 be welded together in the same pipeline system

They can be joined where the design and governing construction code permit it and the welding procedure is qualified for the actual materials and joint. Apply the required joint strength, toughness and other acceptance criteria; meeting a lower-grade minimum alone is not sufficient. API 1104 or ASME Section IX may be specified for qualification as applicable.
