A 42-inch steel pipe has an outside diameter of 1,066.8 mm, but it does not have one fixed nominal wall thickness. The order must state a wall thickness or an applicable standard thickness designation. API 5L X42 is a strength grade, not a 42-inch pipe size. A 42-inch line pipe can be supplied in different grades, with thickness selected from the approved design and purchase specification.

Understanding 42 Inch Pipe Size and Grade
Pipe size, material grade and wall thickness are separate specifications. A complete line-pipe enquiry identifies the outside diameter, nominal wall, grade, PSL, manufacturing process and length. The number 42 in X42 refers to the nominal 42 ksi yield-strength class and does not describe the pipe diameter. Keeping these fields separate prevents quotations for the wrong product.
Nominal Thickness and Standard Thickness Designations
Nominal wall thickness is the ordered reference dimension. Actual measurements are accepted within the applicable manufacturing tolerances. Schedule numbers and designations such as STD and XS must be checked against the dimensional standard for the exact pipe size. Not every wall thickness is assigned a Schedule number at every diameter. API 5L line pipe can also be ordered by a specified OD and wall thickness without a Schedule designation.
Manufacturing Routes ERW vs LSAW
At 42 inches OD, LSAW is a suitable manufacturing option within mills equipped for large-diameter plate forming. ERW production ranges depend on the equipment and should not be assumed to extend to 42 inches. LSAW typically uses JCOE or UOE forming followed by longitudinal submerged arc welding. Verify the manufacturer’s capability for the selected grade, wall thickness and length, together with the required inspection scope.
Nominal Wall Thickness and Manufacturing Tolerances
Manufacturing tolerances depend on the specified standard, process and thickness interval. For a 42-inch LSAW order, check the applicable wall-thickness limits as well as outside diameter, ovality, pipe-end dimensions and straightness. Do not apply seamless-pipe tolerances or a single percentage to every welded product. The governing design code determines how specified thickness, manufacturing allowances and corrosion allowance enter the design calculation.
Selected Wall Thicknesses for 42 Inch Pipe
The following table gives selected nominal wall thicknesses for OD 1,066.8 mm and calculated bare-pipe weights. It is an enquiry reference, not a pressure-rating or Schedule table. Values use a steel density of 7,850 kg/m3 and exclude coating, weld reinforcement and manufacturing variation. Thickness alone does not establish suitability for sour service, offshore installation or a particular operating pressure.
| OD mm | Nominal wall mm | Bare weight kg/m | Specification basis |
| 1066.8 | 9.53 | 248.5 | Design-specified wall |
| 1066.8 | 12.70 | 330.1 | Design-specified wall |
| 1066.8 | 14.27 | 370.4 | Design-specified wall |
| 1066.8 | 17.48 | 452.3 | Design-specified wall |
| 1066.8 | 19.05 | 492.2 | Design-specified wall |
| 1066.8 | 25.40 | 652.3 | Design-specified wall |
Use ASME B31.4, ASME B31.8 or the other governing design code as applicable to the pipeline. Pressure calculations are only one part of thickness selection. Include corrosion and erosion allowances, construction loads, bending, external-pressure stability and any minimum thickness required by the design. Obtain the approved nominal thickness before issuing the purchase order.
How Steel Grade Affects Wall Thickness
A higher specified minimum yield strength can reduce calculated pressure-design thickness under the same design assumptions. However, this benefit may be limited by minimum wall, corrosion allowance, buckling, installation loads and fracture-control requirements. A change of grade must be assessed together with dimensions and delivery condition.
X42 vs X52 and X65
X42, X52 and X65 represent increasing minimum yield-strength classes. They are not fixed pressure categories. Compare the proposed wall thicknesses under the same design code and assumptions. Weldability depends on the actual composition, carbon equivalent, thickness and qualified welding procedure; X65 does not universally require post-weld heat treatment, and X42 is not automatically exempt from preheat.
X42 vs ASTM A106 Grade B
ASTM A106 Grade B is a seamless carbon-steel pipe specification for high-temperature service. It is not a direct substitute for a 42-inch welded API 5L line pipe. Dual certification is valid only where the same finished product independently meets both specifications, including the permitted manufacturing route. A welded LSAW product cannot be accepted as A106 merely because its strength is sufficient.
Procurement Requirements for 42 Inch Line Pipe
Confirm the approved material schedule before requesting a price. In addition to OD and nominal wall, state grade, PSL, standard edition, length, pipe-end preparation and coating. Specify any sour-service, offshore or additional fracture-control requirements separately. This allows suppliers to quote the same technical scope and avoids changes after production has started.
Where API Monogram-marked pipe is required, verify the manufacturer’s current licence and authorized scope. Review material traceability, the agreed inspection document type and the inspection and test plan. Both PSL 1 and PSL 2 welded pipe have applicable examination requirements. Hydrostatic test records should be traceable to the supplied pipe, and third-party witnessing should be agreed before manufacture.
For projects with fixed delivery milestones, confirm stock availability and the time needed for forming, welding, inspection, coating and shipment. Stock may be available for dispatch in seven days and custom production in around 45 days, subject to technical review and order confirmation. Keep document approval and inspection release within the delivery schedule.
Pressure Design and Corrosion Protection
A basic gas-pipeline pressure-design expression is P = 2 x S x t x F x E x T / D, where S is the specified minimum yield strength, t is the thickness defined for the calculation, D is outside diameter, F is the design factor, E is the longitudinal joint factor and T is the temperature factor. For D = 1,066.8 mm, t = 17.48 mm, S = 290 MPa, F = 0.72 and E = T = 1, the illustrative result is about 6.84 MPa. This is not an established MAOP: the approved design, code applicability, allowances, testing and operating conditions must also be assessed.
For H2S-containing service, define the applicable environmental conditions and material qualification requirements. HIC and SSC concern different cracking mechanisms; testing to NACE TM0284 evaluates HIC and does not establish SSC resistance. Specify external corrosion protection separately. 3LPE, FBE and other coatings have distinct technical requirements. An internal flow-efficiency coating is not automatically a corrosion barrier for wet service, so its intended function must be stated.
Conclusion
The nominal wall thickness of a 42-inch pipe must be specified independently of its steel grade. Use the approved design to choose the wall, then confirm the manufacturing tolerances, theoretical weight, inspection requirements and coating scope. A complete OD-by-wall specification gives the manufacturer a clear basis for technical review and quotation.
FAQ
What Does Nominal Wall Thickness Mean
It is the specified reference thickness used to describe and order the pipe. Actual wall measurements must meet the applicable manufacturing limits. It is not automatically the minimum measured wall or the thickness to use in every pressure calculation; follow the governing design code.
Does a 42 Inch Pipe Have to Be API 5L X42
No. The 42-inch dimension describes pipe size, while X42 describes material strength. The design may specify X42, X52 or another permitted grade at the same outside diameter. Always state size and grade separately in the RFQ.
How do I verify a supplier’s API 5L certification
Use the API Composite List to verify the manufacturing mill’s licence when Monogram-marked pipe is required. Also check its approved manufacturing range, material traceability and inspection capability. Specify EN 10204 Type 3.1 or 3.2 documentation and any independent inspection in the order.
Can ERW Pipe Be Supplied at 42 Inches OD
The available ERW diameter range is mill-specific. Do not assume that an ordinary ERW line can manufacture 42-inch pipe. LSAW is an established option for this diameter where the mill’s equipment and approved manufacturing procedure cover the selected wall and grade.
