ASTM A500 covers cold-formed welded and seamless carbon steel structural tubing in round and shaped cross-sections. This article focuses on round ASTM A500 structural pipe because LONGMA’s manufacturing and supply scope is welded round pipe produced by ERW and LSAW processes. Square and rectangular HSS are within the standard’s broader scope but are not included in LONGMA’s product offering.

ASTM A500 Grades and Mechanical Properties
ASTM A500 includes Grades A, B, C and D. Grades B and C are the most relevant to many current structural projects. Mechanical requirements differ between round tubing and shaped tubing, so values for square or rectangular HSS must not be used for round pipe.
| Property for round tubing | Grade B | Grade C |
| Minimum tensile strength | 58 ksi (400 MPa) | 62 ksi (425 MPa) |
| Minimum yield strength | 42 ksi (290 MPa) | 46 ksi (315 MPa) |
| Minimum elongation in 2 in. (50 mm) | 23% | 21% |
| Maximum carbon, heat analysis | 0.26% | 0.23% |
| Maximum manganese, heat analysis | 1.35% | 1.35% |
| Phosphorus and sulfur, max. each | 0.035% | 0.035% |
These are specification minima or maxima, not design allowables. Structural design must use the governing building or bridge code, section properties, connection design, stability checks and project-specific loading. Carbon limits support practical weldability, but they do not eliminate the need for a qualified welding procedure or project-specific preheat assessment.
LONGMA Round Pipe Product Scope
LONGMA supplies ASTM A500 Grades A, B and C as round welded structural pipe. The published product range is 114.3-1,422 mm outside diameter, 6.02-101.6 mm wall thickness and 3-12.5 m length. The applicable ERW or LSAW manufacturing route, grade, dimensions, tolerances and inspection plan should be confirmed during order review. References to seamless, square or rectangular products have been excluded because they are outside LONGMA’s stated supply scope.
Applications of Round ASTM A500 Structural Pipe
- Building columns, bracing and truss members.
- Pedestrian bridges, sign supports and communication structures where the project specification permits ASTM A500.
- Industrial equipment supports, machinery frames and material-handling structures.
- Architectural exposed members and other projects that benefit from a circular hollow section.
Grade selection is a design decision. Grade C provides higher specified minimum yield and tensile strength than Grade B for round tubing, but section size, local and global stability, fatigue, connection resistance, availability and fabrication cost can be more decisive than grade alone.
ASTM A500 Compared with A53 API 5L and EN 10219
| Specification | Primary product context | Important purchasing distinction |
| ASTM A500 | Cold-formed structural tubing | Specify round section, grade, dimensions and structural inspection requirements |
| ASTM A53 | Black or hot-dip galvanized welded/seamless pipe for mechanical and pressure uses and other permitted applications | Schedule identifies dimensions, not material strength; grade and design-code acceptance must be checked separately |
| API 5L | Line pipe for pipeline transportation systems | Pipeline certification does not automatically establish ASTM A500 compliance |
| EN 10219 | Cold-formed welded structural hollow sections | Not a direct one-for-one substitution; equivalence requires project approval |
ASTM A53 and API 5L should not be described as categorically prohibited for all structural use. Their suitability depends on the governing structural specification and engineering approval. Conversely, ASTM A500 is a structural product specification and should not be treated as a pressure-pipe specification without a separate engineering evaluation under the applicable pressure design code.
Fabrication Welding and Corrosion Protection
For building and general structural fabrication, AWS D1.1 is commonly relevant when invoked by the project. The fabricator should qualify or adopt an applicable WPS and determine consumables, preheat, interpass temperature and heat input from grade, thickness, restraint, hydrogen control and ambient conditions. Fixed preheat thresholds should not be inferred from the ASTM A500 grade alone.
Paint systems, hot-dip galvanizing and duplex systems may be considered according to exposure and project requirements. Hot-dip galvanizing should reference the applicable galvanizing specification, such as ASTM A123/A123M where appropriate, and closed members require properly designed vent and drain provisions. DIN 30670 is a polyethylene coating standard for steel pipe and is not the governing standard for hot-dip galvanizing. Steel chemistry can influence coating growth, but low silicon alone does not guarantee coating quality.
Inspection Documentation and Procurement
- Match the MTR heat number and product identification to the pipe marking and packing records.
- Verify chemical and mechanical results against the ordered ASTM A500 grade and round-section requirements.
- Check outside diameter, wall thickness, length, straightness, end condition and visual quality against the purchase order.
- State coating, galvanizing, fabrication, third-party inspection and documentation requirements before production.
- Do not treat API 5L or ISO 9001 certification as a substitute for ASTM A500 product compliance.
MTRs are important for material traceability and engineering submittals, but customs-document requirements vary by shipment and destination. The commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading and any trade-remedy documentation should be confirmed with the importer or customs broker rather than presented as one universal ASTM A500 requirement.
LONGMA Manufacturing and Delivery
LONGMA has manufactured welded steel pipe since 2003. According to the company’s About Us information, the manufacturing site covers 230,000 square meters and annual output has exceeded 500,000 tons. Published ASTM A500 round-pipe sizes, delivery timing, mixed-size loading and project documentation can be confirmed at quotation and order review. LONGMA supports material traceability and third-party inspection arrangements for agreed orders.
Best Practices in Service
Protect pipe ends and coatings during handling, use lifting methods that avoid local dents, and store material above standing water with adequate separation. Cutting and welding procedures should preserve the required geometry and avoid unacceptable local damage. Inspection intervals for protective coatings should be based on exposure severity, structural importance and the owner’s maintenance plan rather than a universal six-month rule. Retain MTRs and inspection records for the period required by the project quality plan and applicable regulations.
Conclusion
ASTM A500 round steel pipe is suited to structural applications when the selected grade, section, connections and corrosion protection are verified against the governing design specification. Grade B serves many general structural duties, while Grade C offers higher specified minimum strength. Buyers should distinguish ASTM A500 from pressure-pipe specifications and confirm that the supplier’s scope, MTR and dimensions match the purchase order.
FAQ
What is the difference between ASTM A500 Grade B and Grade C round pipe
For round tubing, Grade B has minimum yield and tensile strengths of 42 and 58 ksi; Grade C has minimum values of 46 and 62 ksi. Final selection remains a structural design decision.
Can ASTM A500 round pipe be used for pressure service
ASTM A500 is a structural specification. Any proposed pressure use requires assessment under the applicable pressure design code and should not be assumed from ASTM A500 compliance alone.
Can ASTM A500 pipe be hot-dip galvanized
Yes, when the project specifies an applicable galvanizing standard and the member includes suitable venting and drainage. Chemistry and fabrication details should be reviewed with the galvanizer.
How should an MTR be checked
Confirm that the heat number and product marking match, then compare chemistry, mechanical results, grade, dimensions and manufacturing route with the purchase order.
