API 5L X80 line pipe is a PSL2 grade under API Specification 5L, 46th edition. The standard does not list X80 as a PSL1 grade: the listed PSL1 grades extend to X70. Buyers who need X80 should specify the applicable PSL2 grade, delivery condition and project requirements. If a project permits X70, both PSL1 and PSL2 options may be considered where the applicable edition and manufacturing route allow them.
X80 combines high specified strength with additional PSL2 requirements for chemistry, toughness, testing and traceability. The appropriate choice still depends on pressure, temperature, fluid composition, installation and the governing design code. API published the 47th edition in 2026; a purchase order should identify the edition and any agreed supplementary requirements rather than rely on a general grade description.

Understanding API 5L X80 and Product Specification Levels
API 5L specifies requirements for seamless and welded line pipe used in pipeline transportation systems. A grade identifies specified material properties; the product specification level establishes the applicable technical requirements. PSL1 provides a basic set of requirements, while PSL2 includes additional controls, including specified strength limits, toughness testing, chemistry and traceability provisions.
Under the 46th edition, X80 is designated L555 or X80 with a PSL2 delivery-condition suffix. X80M and X80Q represent different delivery conditions, so an enquiry should include the full designation. These suffixes should not be confused with additional service designations, such as S where applicable to sour-service pipe. The standard also includes grades above X80 for specified manufacturing routes; X80 is not the highest grade in the specification.
Mechanical Properties and Manufacturing
For X80 PSL2 pipe, Table 7 of API 5L, 46th edition, lists the following pipe-body properties in SI units. The stated limits are specification values, not a direct pressure rating for a pipeline.
| Property | X80 PSL2 value | What it means |
| Minimum yield strength | 555 MPa | Specified minimum yield strength for the pipe body |
| Maximum yield strength | 705 MPa | Upper limit for the applicable grade and conditions |
| Minimum tensile strength | 625 MPa | Specified minimum tensile strength for the pipe body |
| Maximum tensile strength | 825 MPa | Upper limit for the applicable grade and conditions |
The values and table notes must be read with the ordered edition, pipe dimensions and any supplementary requirements. Elongation is determined under the applicable formula and specimen requirements. Welding procedure qualification and finished-pipe inspection also remain important. High grade alone does not establish allowable operating pressure; diameter, wall thickness, temperature, design factors, allowances and the governing code all affect the result.
LONGMA supplies round electric resistance welded (ERW) and longitudinal submerged arc welded (LSAW) pipes. ERW forms steel strip into a round section and joins its edges using electrical resistance heating and pressure. LSAW forms plate into a cylindrical shape and produces a longitudinal submerged arc weld. Manufacturing route, grade, size and inspection scope must be matched to the purchase order. Confirm availability for the specific X80 size and delivery condition when requesting a quotation.
Comparing X80 PSL2 with X70 PSL1 and PSL2
X70 PSL1 may be suitable where its strength and the basic product requirements meet the design and owner specification. X70 PSL2 adds the applicable PSL2 requirements for material properties, toughness, inspection and traceability. X80 PSL2 provides a higher specified minimum yield strength, which may permit a different wall-thickness design when all other code requirements are satisfied.
| Choice | Product level under API 5L 46th edition | Procurement consideration |
| X70 PSL1 | PSL1 | Check that strength and basic requirements satisfy the design |
| X70 PSL2 | PSL2 | Specify the delivery condition and required testing |
| X80 PSL2 | PSL2 | Check high-strength welding, inspection and project-specific requirements |
The selected grade should be evaluated against external loading, buckling, fracture control and construction conditions as well as internal pressure. A higher grade does not automatically give a thinner or lower-cost pipe for every project. Standard dimensions, plate or coil availability, fabrication requirements and the cost of inspection can change the final comparison.
PSL2 has additional requirements relative to PSL1, but inspection is not identical for every manufacturing process or product. The applicable edition specifies the method, coverage and acceptance criteria for the pipe body, weld seam and pipe ends. A purchase order should state additional examinations when an owner requires testing beyond the product standard.
Sour Service, Welding and Corrosion Protection
For H₂S-containing service, the design team should assess the fluid conditions and the applicable material-selection requirements, including ISO 15156 where relevant. Under API 5L, the purchaser must identify any applicable sour-service supplementary requirements, the complete grade designation and the specified test conditions. HIC and SSC requirements depend on the applicable standard, product and project specification; the presence of H₂S alone should not be reduced to a single generic test statement.
Field welding of X80 requires an appropriately qualified procedure and trained personnel under the applicable construction code. Carbon equivalent is one input to weldability, together with composition, wall thickness, restraint, heat input, hydrogen control and preheat or interpass temperature. The applicable carbon-equivalent formula and limit depend on the ordered specification and material chemistry. Review the mill test certificate and welding procedure before fabrication begins.
External coatings may include FBE, 3LPE or 3LPP, depending on operating temperature, installation conditions and corrosion-control design. Coating selection is separate from pipe grade. For example, DIN 30670 covers polyethylene coating systems; ISO 21809-2 covers applicable single-layer FBE systems. Specify field-joint coating, inspection, repair and cathodic protection as required by the project. An internal lining should be selected for its intended fluid and function; no coating automatically prevents all corrosion.
X80 Procurement and Inspection Checklist
Start with the owner specification and design code. The enquiry should state the complete API 5L grade, PSL, delivery condition, standard edition, outside diameter, nominal wall thickness, length, quantity and pipe manufacturing process. Add the design and minimum operating temperatures, fluid composition, coating system, end preparation and delivery destination.
Agree the inspection and test plan before production. It should identify required mechanical and impact tests, hydrostatic testing, applicable nondestructive examination, inspection hold points and any supplementary sour or offshore requirements. Inspection methods and coverage should match the ordered product and standard; RT should not be assumed to be mandatory for every pipe simply because it is PSL2.
Review material identification, measured dimensions and marking against the order. Request an EN 10204 3.1 certificate or 3.2 inspection document when specified, together with supporting test and coating reports. A 3.2 document has different validation requirements from 3.1; third-party inspection and its scope should be agreed explicitly. API Monogram marking applies when the product is supplied under the relevant licence and programme conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is X80 available as PSL1 pipe?
API 5L, 46th edition, lists X80 as a PSL2 grade. Its PSL1 grade range extends to X70. For a new order, confirm the edition named by the project and use the complete grade and delivery-condition designation.
Is X80 PSL2 automatically suitable for sour service?
No. The purchaser must specify the required sour-service supplementary provisions and demonstrate that the material and welds are suitable for the actual H₂S environment. Chemical controls, hardness and corrosion testing depend on the applicable requirements.
Does X80 always reduce the required wall thickness?
Not necessarily. Higher yield strength can influence pressure design, but external pressure, buckling, corrosion allowance, installation loads and minimum wall requirements can govern the final selection.
What should a buyer send with an enquiry?
Provide the grade and delivery condition, PSL, standard edition, dimensions, quantity, service conditions, coating, inspection requirements and destination. State whether third-party inspection or an EN 10204 3.2 document is required.
